In autumn, Haut-Giffre slows to a different pace. The forests turn shades of yellow, copper and red, the villages become quieter and the light brings out the shape of the mountains. It is an ideal season for walking, discovering local heritage or simply taking time to enjoy the scenery. From Châtillon-sur-Cluses to Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, via La Rivière-Enverse, Morillon and Verchaix, there is plenty of variety. A valley-floor walk, a loop through the hamlets, a cultural visit or an indoor activity can all be combined to suit the weather and your plans for the day.

The autumn colours do not appear everywhere at the same time. They generally arrive first at higher elevations, then gradually move down towards the villages and valley floor. Weather, exposure and tree species mean the timing varies from one year to the next.

The Chemin des Guers in Châtillon-sur-Cluses, the Grands Bois circuit in La Rivière-Enverse, the loop from Lac Bleu through the hamlets of Morillon, the Art and Nature Trail and the Verchaix interpretation trail all combine walking, scenery and local heritage.

In Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, the village, its hamlets and natural sites offer a very different setting. Before setting off, always check the weather, trail conditions and any access restrictions. In autumn, the first snowfall can quickly change conditions at higher elevations.

What to do when it rains

Several valley-floor walks allow dogs, usually on a lead. Rules vary between natural areas and individual routes. Dogs are not allowed in some protected areas, even on a lead. Livestock, livestock guardian dogs and wildlife also mean that extra care is needed.

Plan an autumn weekend or longer stay

For a first visit, two or three days are enough to discover several sides of the valley: villages and forests in the lower valley, walks around Morillon and Verchaix, then a full day in Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval.
