Beginner ski lessons for children and adults
You can be keen to ski and still have no idea what to do with your skis. An instructor helps you find your balance, control your speed and use the lifts. They also choose terrain that suits your progress.
For children: take it one step at a time
The right lesson depends on your child’s age, experience and enthusiasm. When booking, say whether it’s their first time in the snow or they’ve already had lessons. Check the school’s entry requirements, lesson duration and equipment list. Leave time for breaks too: those first runs take plenty of concentration.
For adults: you don’t have to start young
Are you joining skiers but have never tried it yourself? Would you like to revisit the basics? Simply explain your situation to the ski school. Depending on the options available, group lessons let you progress with other learners, while private lessons offer more individual attention.

Which ski pass should a beginner choose?
For your first sessions, choose a pass that covers the lifts you’ll use. Ask your ski school for advice before buying: the area you ski may change as your skills develop.
In Morillon, the beginner pass covers the Essertoux magic carpet, the beginner drag lift and the Esserts chairlift, as well as two return gondola trips from the village. In Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, check the options for the local ski area.
Lift passes, lessons and equipment hire are separate services unless an offer explicitly includes them. Check what your booking covers when planning your budget.
How should you prepare for your first day skiing?
- Book your lesson: confirm the ability level, meeting point and ski pass you’ll need.
- Allow time to get equipped: tell the hire shop you’re a beginner and have your equipment settings checked.
- Arrive with time to spare: collecting skis, getting your boots on and reaching the lesson takes time on your first day.
- Keep your plans flexible: enjoy a few runs, take a break and carry on if you still have the energy and enthusiasm.
- Check what’s open: available pistes and lifts depend on snow cover and the day’s conditions.

Build your skiing skills and explore new areas
Part of the pleasure is finding that a run that looked daunting in the morning feels more familiar by the afternoon. Before heading to a different area, ask your instructor which pistes suit your ability and check that your pass covers them. In Morillon, you can gradually explore more of the ski area.
Can you already slow down, turn and stop? In Morillon, the Marvel piste, a long green run through the forest, could be your next step. Ask your instructor whether you’re ready for its roughly five kilometres, and check that your pass includes the Sairon chairlift. Marvel and Marveline are two different pistes.
To keep learning or try a different discipline, explore all skiing activities in the Haut-Giffre and choose an option suited to your ability.
