An autumn weekend in Haut-Giffre

Two days are enough to discover several sides of Haut-Giffre: the villages and banks of the Giffre, forests in changing autumn colours, then the more dramatic scenery of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. This itinerary is deliberately flexible so that you can adapt it to the weather and off-season opening times.

Friday evening: arrive in the valley

Settle into your accommodation and enjoy a simple first evening. Locate the shops, check the weather for the following day and book a table if needed. In autumn, some restaurants close several days a week, so a quick call can save disappointment.

Saturday: villages, forests and heritage

Morning around Morillon

Start at Lac Bleu while the light is still soft. Depending on what you feel like doing, stay close to the lake or follow the loop towards Les Miaux and Le Châtelard. Chapels, hamlets and views of the surrounding peaks add a heritage dimension to the walk.

Lunch in the valley

Choose somewhere open in Morillon, Verchaix or nearby. On market days, local producers can also provide everything you need for a picnic, provided you check opening times and availability beforehand.

Afternoon in La Rivière-Enverse or Verchaix

The Grands Bois circuit links hamlets, chapels, forests and the banks of the Giffre. For a shorter outing, the Verchaix interpretation trail uses fifteen panels to help you discover the landscape and local heritage. Finish early enough to be back before dark.

Sunday: head to Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval

Spend the second day in Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. Discover the village, church and abbey, then adapt your walk to the conditions. A walk in the authorised areas lets you enjoy the impressive scenery without necessarily choosing a long or technical route.

The Gorges des Tines offer a short loop but include metal ladders and sections that can become slippery in wet weather. Check access before setting off and choose another walk if conditions are unsuitable.

The wet-weather alternative

Reverse the programme and schedule visits, workshops or indoor leisure activities during the wettest periods. A brighter spell is often enough to explore a village or walk beside the Giffre. Avoid gorges, ladders, steep slopes and leaf-covered paths when the ground is waterlogged.

The weekend with a dog

Check each route page before setting off. Several walks allow dogs on a lead, but dogs are not permitted in some protected areas. Keep your dog close in the presence of livestock, livestock guardian dogs, wildlife and other walkers.
