Learn everything about Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval's history : Ponce de Faucigny and the abbey, the iron minning activity and also the foundation of the Compagnie des Guides.
Booking is mandatory in our tourist offices.
The abbey of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval is undoubtedly its most historically rich building. Founded in 1144, it is the starting point for the history of our little village. The church next door is the logical consequence of the abbey's settlement in this remote corner of Haute-Savoie. On this tour, you'll discover the history of the abbey from its very beginnings, with the arrival of Ponce de Faucigny and the canons of St. Augustine. You'll then discover its evolution and the many roles it has played to date. Inside the abbey, you can admire the main room with its carved wooden beams dating from the 17th century. The church of St. Mary Magdalene was built in the 13th century. A fire destroyed part of it in 1680. The building is decorated in a variety of styles, reflecting the different periods of reconstruction and renovation. We'll take a short break outside the church to admire its magnificent bulbous bell tower. This Baroque-style bell tower is very common in the Savoy region, and can also be found on our Sizère chapels. As we make our way around the village square, known as Place du Tilleul (in reference to the ancient lime tree that once stood there), we'll also take a look at the various adjoining historic buildings, such as Maison Allaman, one of Sixt's oldest houses, and Maison de la Montagne, the former abbey granary. Meet in front of the Maison de la Montagne in Sixt-fer-à-Cheval.
