The hamlet of Salvagny in Sixt has managed to stay as authentic as they get.
Come on this tour to explore the charming hamlet and you'll see some characteristic barns, sculpted ponds and magnificently well preserved farms.
On an exploration of the traditional houses and farms of the mountain, you can expect to learn all about the harsh reality of this natural environment, as well as the social and economic history of Savoie and Haute-Savoie. There is so much to see in terms of the traditional character and architecture of the chalets, the different residential regions, the layouts and uses, as well as the ways of living here. The stone found in the local quarries and wood were the main materials used in building houses here.
Today, there are still some of these old farms in the area and they have had to be extended and modernised to keep up with the evolution of the farming industry. Today, the mountains are a popular choice of destination for city dwellers, either to live or for a holiday.
In Savoie and Haute-Savoie, the architecture can vary from one valley to the next. There are 2 possible reasons for this: in the past, due to the isolated geographical location, people sought out very local solutions to simple issues. Therefore, when someone found a viable solution, it was quickly adopted by everyone. They used materials that could be found close to home. It goes without saying that in the past, transporting materials from one valley to another was a waste of valuable time, money and energy.
In any case, often the same materials are found: stone and wood because the issues faced by residents are often related to the cold and insulation for 4 to 5 months of the year. Traditional houses are very big, sometimes with a surface area of more than 500 m2. This is because in the past, these houses needed to be big enough to accommodate all the generations of the same family, as well as the animals and hay.
